amateur はアマチュア、素人、経験未熟、プロじゃない、等々、日本語からはあまり良い印象はない。「ど素人」には蔑んだニュアンスを感じる。
私は「職人気質」が好きなので、「プロ意識」は重要だと思っている。ただ、今回のプレゼンから、「アマチュアだからこそ」のパワー、そして魅力を感じた。むしろ「変なプロ意識」が足かせとなっていることもあるだろう。「古臭い固定観念」「今となっては嘘」を吹き飛ばすのも「素人力」かもしれない。
インタビュアーの次の言葉が重要。

Author and journalist A.J. Jacobs has made a career of being an amateur. He talks about the year he spent living biblically — following the rules in the Bible as literally as possible.

This was one of the huge lessons of the year is that I almost pretended to be a better person, and I became a little bit of a better person. So I had always thought, you know, you change your mind and you change your behavior, but it's often the other way around. You change your behavior and you change your mind.

Taylor Wilson is a self-taught nuclear physicist who sees every obstacle as a challenge. He describes how — at age 14 — he built a working nuclear fusion reactor in his garage.

WILSON: (Laughter) I think that, you know, people who have, you know, spent their professional careers in a field sometimes get bent to those preconceptions or the way things are done. And I think that young people don't necessarily develop those preconceptions, and so they just go out and do. And, you know, I didn't really know that, you know, this wasn't the way things were done, or, I wasn't convinced this is the way they should be done. And I think that's my personality. I try to fight against every obstacle that comes into my way and I've never let someone telling me no stop me, so to speak.
