Starman で笑顔で号泣
David Bowie の訃報にはすぐに気づいた。未読の BBC の Podcast のキャプションにも、訃報を伝える文が...。なるべく関連記事を見ないように、仕事に集中するも、手を休めると頭をかすめる。
ひと段落して、無意識に Bowie のアルバム "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and he Spiders from Mars" を選んでいた。一曲目の "Five Years" から泣きそうになった...。
このアルバムが、私が最初に手に入れた David Bowie のアルバム。何度も何度も聴いた。そして毎度、アルバムの一曲目から最後まで通しで聞いてしまう、その日もそうだった。ただいつもと違うのは、"Starman" で大いに泣いてしまった、笑顔で...。

Bowie が逝ってしまったからじゃないが、改めて全曲聴いたこのアルバムは、全体的に もの悲しい... 。そして、やはり名盤であることに気づく。
大阪の音楽好きが集まるバーで、外人客の集団が、弾き語り ギターに合わせて、この曲を肩を取り合って大合唱したという逸話を思い出して、また泣けてきた。
書けなかった
訃報があった週のBBC Podcast ニュースでは、何度も Bowie のことが取り上げられた。その度に、何が語られているかを知りたくて、慣れない欧州系の英語を聞いた。好きな音楽の話題のためか、驚くほどに聞き取れた。
英国の公共放送局である BBC の Bowie の取り上げ方を聴きながら、「ブリティッシュロック精神は健在」と嬉しくなった。「日本の場合は...」と考えると憂鬱になるので、考えないようにした。
他にも Bowie 関係の記事を多少なりとも読んだが、彼に関するブログ投稿は控えていた。というより「書けなかった」のだ。The Rolling Stones や Bob Dylan ほどには、彼の楽曲を聴いていないのだ。Ziggy Stardust の頃の David Bowie を偏愛し過ぎているからだろう。
そして、まだまだ現役で活動してくれると思っていた。「信じたくないな...」が本音かもしれない。
英国ロック、世界の Rock and Roll Music への彼の貢献を思うと、やはりこの喪失は大きい。そんなことを今日も考えながら、Rolling Stone 誌の Web サイトをボンヤリ眺めて、ある映像に気づいた。
Under Pressure
その映像とは David Bowie Bassist Gail Ann Dorsey: 'He Altered the Course of My Life' にある "Under Pressure" 。この演奏のクオリティの高さに、胸と目頭が熱くなり、堪らなくなってしまった。そして、これまでモヤモヤした気持ちがスッキリした。
Gail Ann Dorsey がベースで、Freddie のパートのボーカルを担当。演奏から容易に想像できたのは、Annie Lennox と Bowie のバージョン。そのことは、彼女のインタビューからも分かる。
Exactly. That's my whole experience with him in a nutshell. He was like this incredible mentor. I feel so privileged to have had this opportunity to learn about music and being professional and stretching and doing things that I didn't think I could do, like "Under Pressure." I said to him, "There's no way I'm going to be able to sing and play that — are you kidding?" He was like, "I'll give you two weeks." And then he walked out of the room, so I had to figure it out.
This was early on during the Nine Inch Nails tour. We got better at it throughout the years. It started with him asking if I'd seen him do it with Annie Lennox for the Freddie Mercury tribute. I said, "Yeah, of course. Everyone saw that." He said, "I have a tape of that. Have a listen and maybe we can do our own version." I said, "Is someone else going to play bass while I sing it?'" It was emotional for me because Queen are my favorite band of all time. Every night before I sang that song, I looked up at the lights and said a prayer to Freddie. I said, "I hope I do you justice, Freddie."

ギタリスト Mick Ronson との 1972 年の演奏だ。
Bowie のキャリアの変化は、Bob Dylan 並みに激しい。とはいえ、新たなものを生み出すためには「変わるのは必然」だったと思う。
Live by Request
この番組、Bowie がラジオDJのようにリクエストを受ける姿が非常に楽しい。2002 年頃のようだ。
ベースとコーラスは Gail Ann Dorsey 、バンドの演奏もこなれた感じで良い。Starman, Let's Dance, Ziggy Stardust を同じステージで聴けるのは楽しい。
