しかし、「誰でもできること」は、「機械」でチャッチャと片付けてしまえば良いので、その意味では「世知辛い」とは思えない。こんな風に「早さ」は好きで、同時に「速さ」も好きな私は、「チャッチャと片付ける」のが好みだ。理由は、その方が集中するし出来も良い、から。
ところが、「創造的、独創的」なものを生み出すには、「早さ」はむしろ弊害なのだと痛感した。つまり「時間をかけなければならない」ことがある。

経験上から言えるのは、ギターなどの楽器演奏、外国語の習得、数学、統計学、データ分析...。どれも長年やっているものだが、怠けていた時期もあったが、今でも没頭している。もしかして、怠けていた時期、「procrastination していた時期」があったからこそ続けられているのかもしれない。「本当の魅力」は、時間を経なければ見えないし、「終わりがない」からこそ続けられるのかもしれない。
この英単語の定義上は、創造性を生み出す行為とは真逆にある。

日本語では「グズグズする」「ダラダラする」という感じで、否定的な意味しかない。

やりたくないわけでなく
今は「やるべき時じゃない」からやらない

When he gets onstage, 11 minutes in he leaves his prepared remarks to utter four words that changed the course of history - I have a dream. That was not in the script. By delaying the task of finalizing the speech until the very last minute, he left himself open to the widest range of possible ideas. And because the text wasn't set in stone, he had freedom to improvise.
この「彼」とは Martin Luther King, Jr のこと。あの超有名な "I have a dream." の一節は原稿になかったし、演説のギリギリまで原稿を推敲し続けたそうだ。
And this is what I missed with Warby Parker. They had backup plans lined up, and that made me doubt that they had the courage to be original. Now, on the surface, a lot of original people look confident, but, behind the scenes, they feel the same fear and doubt that the rest of us do. They just manage it differently. Now, in my research, I discovered there are two different kinds of doubt. There's self-doubt and idea doubt. Self-Doubt is paralyzing. It leads you to freeze. But idea doubt is energizing. It motivates you to test, to experiment, to refine, just like MLK did. Instead of saying, I'm crap, you say the first few drafts are always crap, and I'm just not there yet.
オリジナルなことを生み出す人たちは自信があるように見える。しかし、彼らも我々と同じような不安や疑問がある。乗り越え方が我々とは違うだけ。疑問には二種類ある、self-doubt「自信喪失 or 自己疑問」と idea doubt「アイデアへの疑問」。self-doubt な人はダメになってしまう。しかし、idea doubt な人は力に変える、実験して、試して、洗練する、キング牧師がやったように。
So when you see those things, don't make the same mistake I did. Don't write them off. And when that's you, don't count yourself out either. Know that being quick to start but slow to finish can boost your creativity, that you can motivate yourself by doubting your ideas and embracing the fear of failing to try, and that you need a lot of bad ideas in order to get a few good ones.
Look, being original is not easy, but I have no doubt about this: it's the best way to improve the world around us.
「早く始めてゆっくり終える」が想像力を掻き立てる。自分のアイデアを疑い、失敗への恐れを許容することが動機付けとなる。少しの良いアイデアの発見には、たくさんのダメなアイデアが必要。

So for me, all I cared about when I came out of college was doing creative - a creative pursuit of some kind, whether it was writing music or writing. And I didn't start doing, you know, one of those creative passions full time till I was 31. That procrastination set me back nine years there. So I think the answer isn't to be a procrastinator. That's someone who's not in control of their own life. The answer is to be in control and to know that it's smart to slow down and to do that in a controlled, intentional way.
大学卒業したら、創造的なこと、音楽を作ったり物書きなどをしようと思ってた。そして、31 歳になるまで始めなかった。そんな procrastination な 9 年間だった。思うに procrastination になることが解じゃない。
強調した箇所が「解」なのだが、訳さなかった。ここまで読んで下さった人は、概ね「解」は察知すると思います。
この Tim Urban のプレゼンは面白かった。彼のブログサイト Wait But Why を少し覗いたが、やはり面白そうだ。TED プレゼンでも使われたのが Why Procrastinators Procrastinate 。
これが procrastinate な人の頭の中。
