「消された人たち」on "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" Album Cover

伊坂幸太郎著「ゴールデンスランパー」について書いた後、Abbey Road の「B面」を繰り返し聴きながら、ずっと懸念してたことを思い出した。

John, George, Paul の三人が選んだ有名人と The Beatles 共に写っているのがアルバムジャケット。

つまり、アルバムジャケットから「消された 5 人」がいるということ。


「ゴミアルバム」だったとしても

このアルバム、500 Greatest Albums of All Time では第 1 位、そのことに納得する反面、「そうかなぁ」という疑問もある。少なくとも、私にとっての The Beatles のアルバムでは一番ではない。ちなみに、同様のランキング 500 Greatest Songs of All Time の、Like a Rolling Stone の第 1 位には納得してる。

面白いのは、Keith Richards が「ゴミアルバムだ」と酷評してること（参照：Keith Richards: The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's' Was 'Rubbish'）。The Beatles ファンからの反論はあるだろうが、「ゴミ」とまでは言わないが、私は Keith の言いたいこともわかる。

とはいえ、本作がアルバム作りの「ひとつの到達点を示した」ことは否定しない。「ゴチャゴチャと音楽を加工する」ことを Keith は非難してるのかもしれないが、それも一理あるのだけどね。Stones も "Their Satanic Majesties Request" で似たことをやろうとしたからこその Keith の発言かもしれない。

同意するのは、このアルバムジャケットのインパクの大きさ、楽しいのは間違いない。LP盤の豪華な見開き、裏ジャケットの歌詞など、記憶にしっかり刻まれている。手に持った時の質感や重さまで、思い出すことができる。

消された人たち

これが発売されたジャケット。ここから「消された人物」がいるか気になってる。ご存知の方は教えて頂けるとありがたいです。「肖像権や著作権の関係で消えている」という意見を聞いたことがあるが、それなら時間が経てば逆に権利は消滅してると思うのだが...。

この記事で扱っているのは、アルバムが発表される前に「消された 5 人」。

John の意向で当初は Hitler もあったそうだ（参照：Hitler Did Not Make The Final Cut On The Beatles “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” Album Cover）。次の画像、矢印の先に Hitler の姿がある。

次の画像が「消される前」のもの。分かるのは「2」の Mohandas Gandhi 、「5」の Albert Einstein 。「消した後」の調整のためか、最終盤とは実際の The Beatles メンバーの配置が異なる。

以下「消された人たち」について、記事からの引用。日本語訳は、私が知ってる二人だけにした。ただ、英文の意味がはっきりしないので要点だけの訳。

1. Leo Gorcey – An American Movie Actor  – He was in the original photo but removed when a fee of $400 was demanded by his agent.  The image used was from the movie “Angels with Dirty Faces”.

2. Mohandas Gandhi – Was removed, because according to McCartney, “Gandhi also had to go because the head of EMI, Sir Joe Lockwood, said that in India they wouldn’t allow the record to be printed”
McCartney によれば「Gandhi も外さなきゃならなかった、EMI の幹部の Sir Joe Lockwood が言うには、インドでは許可されないから」。

「Gandhi の写真の掲載がインドでは許可されない」という感じなのかな？

3. Timothy Carey –  An American Film and Televison actor – Carey’s cut-out is obscured by George Harrison on the album cover and he can only be seen on out-take photos from the session. The image of Carey is from Stanley Kubrick’s movie “The Killing“.

4. Bette Davis– An American Actress – Like Carey, her cut-out was used for the photo but was obscured by Harrison as well.  She can only be seen in photo out-takes from the session.  Her cut-out image was taken from the 1939 movie “The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex“.

5. Albert Einstein – His cut-out was mostly obscured in the final photo by John Lennon as only his hair is visible.  Einstein can only be seen in the out-take photos.
