私だけが知ってること：救えるのは他者

思わず泣いてしまった、それは嬉し泣きだったと思う。

This American Life 577: Something Only I Can See の Act One. Do These Genes Make Me Look Fatless? を、気づけば高い集中力で読み続けていた。ハッピーエンドを期待していた訳ではないが、物語の結末を読みながら泣いていた。

主人公は Muscular Dystrophy「筋ジストロフィー」を患っている女性 Jill Viles 、記事タイトルの DIY scientist とは彼女のこと。幼少の頃から、自分の身体のことを知ろうと、大量の本を読む。Jill は医者になったわけではないが、それでもずっと調べ続けた。

その過程で、医者や学者が信用しなかった仮説を打ち立てた。その結果、彼女の父の命を救い、北京オリンピック銅メダルリストの Priscilla Lopes-Schliep を救った。

特に、「筋ジストロフィー」と筋肉隆々のオリンピアの共通性など、普通は気付かない。ハーバード大学の遺伝学者 Robert Green ですら、この Jill の仮説を一蹴した。次は Jill の仮説の正しさを知った後の、その学者の反応。

Robert Green  Oh, I was knocked over. I was completely and utterly astounded. And I remember thinking, I was ashamed that I had doubted this individual because she turned out to have a remarkable discovery. 

疑ったことが恥ずかしい、彼女はとんでもない発見をしたのだから。

この瞬間、この学者が悪者というわけじゃないが、「正義は勝つ」みたいに喜んだ。この Jill の功績は、次の取り組みに繋がる。

Recently, a group of scientists started something called the Matchmaker Exchange. It's a kind of OK Cupid for rare diseases, where people can share genetic and symptom information with each other and doctors. The hope is that it will spark new discoveries. 

最近になって、科学者たちが Matchmaker Exchange と称する取り組みを始めた。稀な病気の「出会い系サイト」のようなもの。遺伝子や症状の情報を患者や医者で共有する取り組み。新しい発見に繋がることを期待している。

Etienne Lefai  It's just the willpower of Jill's that have made things possible.

Jill Viles  [SOBBING] 

David Epstein  Could you hear that OK? 

Jill Viles  Yeah, I could hear that. 

David Epstein  And so what's in your mind when you hear that? 

Jill Viles  It really does feel really good. Wow. It's kind of like this weight come off of me. So I'm exhausted emotionally and intellectually and in every way possible. And I am so happy. You know, I don't want to be the crazy person that's on the internet all the time coming in. You know, I really feel confidence. I can go somewhere with this. And I got some really great people.

結果的に二人の命を救ったが、Jill 自身の病気が治った訳ではない。それでも「重荷がとれた気分」と発する Jill に深く共感する。

近頃、直接的な「自分のため」という行為に魅力を感じなくなった。「誰かを救えてこそ」という考えが強くなっている。そのためか、余計にこの物語は沁みる。

AI がブームのように騒がれる昨今だが、Jill の発見を AI ができるとは思えない。それは、Jill のような情報の提供者、そして「見つけ出すヒトの強い意思」がない限り不可能なのだ。ますます「ヒトと AI のタッグこそが最強」と確信する。そして「正義は勝つ」と信じたい。

AI を恐怖する、AI を無視する姿勢は、進化の妨げにしかならない。
