When the job was over, Steve had the signatures of the forty-six key players on the team engraved on the inside of every Mac. Even people working on the Apple II found Steve’s performance inspiring. “We used to say that the Mac people had God on their side,” said one only half jokingly.
開発が終わり、Steve は主要な開発者 45 名の署名を、全ての Mac の内側に掘り入れた。Apple II に携わっていた人でさえ Steve の成果には興奮した。「Mac 開発に携わった連中には神が味方したと当時は言ったものだよ」と半ば冗談混じりで語った。

次は、An original Mac 128k shell signed by 25 folks from the original Mac team から、初期 Mac の開発メンバーの一人 Andy Hertzfeld の言葉：
Since the Macintosh team were artists, it was only appropriate that we sign our work. Steve came up with the awesome idea of having each team member's signature engraved on the hard tool that molded the plastic case, so our signatures would appear inside the case of every Mac that rolled off the production line. Most customers would never see them, since you needed a special tool to look inside, but we would take pride in knowing that our names were in there, even if no one else knew.
Macintosh チームは芸術家の集まりだったから、サインをするのは当たり前のことだった。各メンバーのサインをプラスチックケースに掘り入れるという、とんでもないアイデアを思いついたのは Steve で、製品となるあらゆる Mac の内側に我々のサインが付いた。ほとんどのお客さんの目に付かないのは、Mac の内側を見るには特殊工具が必要だから。とはいえ、我々は自分たちの名前が刻印されていることを誇りに思った、誰も気づかなかったとしてもね。
Brent Schlender 著 “Becoming Steve Jobs" は、初期 Mac を開発、その後「Apple から追放」された箇所まで読み進めた。この時点で本書や Steve Jobs への想いを語ることができるが、上記の「サインの逸話」だけでも Steve Jobs のことを想像できる。
本書で知ったこの「サインの逸話」だが、ネットをざっと調べた限り、結構知られているようだ。とはいえ Wikipedia の Macintosh 128K を一読する限りでは、本書とは違う印象を持った。特に：
こうして低価格と高性能を両立したことにより、Macintosh 128Kはまさに「飛ぶように売れ」、その販売台数は1984年5月3日までに72,000台に達した。
私も本書を読むまでは「Mac は発売以来順調」と勝手に思い込んでいた。
No wonder sales dried up. In his effort to realize a vision, Steve had slighted the machine’s utility.
売り行きが止まったのは不思議じゃない。懸命に理想を実現する中、Steve は機械の実用性を軽んじていた。
この当時の Steve Jobs らしいが、結果「Apple 追放」となる。
