本文中の "Steve Jobs" を含めると約 20 件。
そんな私だが、Steve Jobs の伝記を読むのはこれが初めて。Steve Jobs について知っていたのは僅かな事実、そしてよく囁かれていた「噂」（「Steve Jobs は嫌なやつ」的な話）。そんな「噂」は無視してきたが、本書を読んで「そんな噂」の理由も分かった。
とはいえ、本書を読んで「Steve Jobs のことが分かった」なんて豪語する気は毛頭ない。ないが、「Steve Jobs が "Steve Jobs" になった」"Becoming Steve Jobs" の背景にあった重要な「事実」の多くを知ることができた。そんな背景をここで書くのは無理（「読んでください」としか言えない）。
本書 vs. Issacson 本
それ以外でも、本書から引用したい箇所は多い。
今回は、最終章の Chapter 17 "Just Tell Them I'm Being an Asshole" から。この章タイトルの逸話も興味深いのだが、この引用は本書の特徴の一つを表している（日本語訳 by りんだ）：
“This picture of him isn’t understood,” says Cook. “I thought the [Walter] Isaacson book did him a tremendous disservice. It was just a rehash of a bunch of stuff that had already been written, and focused on small parts of his personality. You get the feeling that [Steve’s] a greedy, selfish egomaniac. It didn’t capture the person. The person I read about there is somebody I would never have wanted to work with over all this time. Life is too short.” In saying this, Cook echoed the feeling of many of Steve’s close friends—in interview after interview, they complained that very little of what has been published offers any sense of why they would have worked so long and so hard for Steve. Those former employees share another common thread, too: the idea that they did the very best work of their lives for Steve.
Tim Cook 曰く「Walter Issacson の本は Steve には酷い仕打ちだと思った。既に書かれていたことの単なる焼き直しであって、Steve の個性の小さな部分に焦点を合わせている。Steve の貪欲さ、自己中心的さを感じるが、その人自身を捉えてはいない。私がその本で読み取れる人物は、ずっと一緒に仕事をしたいとは思わない人。人生は短過ぎる」。こう話しながら Cook は、Steve の多くの親友たちの気持ちを繰り返した。その気持ちとは、何度も行ったインタビューで、これまで出版された Steve の本は、なぜこれほどまでに長く大変な仕事を Steve のためにやってきたかを物語っていない。Steve と働いた人たちは、別の共通認識も持っている。それは、自分らの人生での偉業を Steve のためになしえたこと。
驚いたことに、本書の Wikipedia にも同じことが書かれていた：
In addition, Tim Cook was not happy with Walter Isaacson's official biography, Steve Jobs.
さらに、Andy Hertzfeld（1981年に Macintosh 開発メンバー、1984年 Apple 退社）による記事 Would Steve Jobs Have Liked the New Biography? I Don’t Think So では、Isaacson の本を「悪くない」と評価し、Tim Cook の批評に反対している。
どちらの意見が正しいかの判断はできない。しかし、私の印象は変わった。本書を読んでる最中は、本書が面白くて「Isaacson 本は読まなくて良いかもな」となっていたのが、読了後に上記の記事などから Isaacson 本への興味は増した。
Steve Jobs が Bob Dylan ファンなのは有名。そこで調べてみたのが、本書と Isaacson 本で "Bob Dylan" が登場する回数（デジタル版だからこそ容易に分かる回数、とはいえ本書は紙版も買った）：
464頁の本書では 4 件
656頁の Isaacson 本では 16 件
同じく Dylan ファンの私としては、この事実だけで Isaacson 本を読みたくなった。
2011年10月17日に開かれた memorial service「追悼会」では：
Bono and the Edge from U2 performed Steve’s favorite Dylan song, “Every Grain of Sand”
全くもって奇遇なのだが、私はこの箇所を読んだ前日の夜、Bob Dylan All The Songs の "Every Grain of Sand" のページを読んで、Johnny Cash の葬儀で Sheryl Crow が "Every Grain of Sand" を唄ったことを知った：
もちろん私も "Every Grain of Sand" は好きで、収録アルバム "Shot of Love" も大好き（Bob Dylan All The Songs でのアルバム評価は高くはないが...）。

本書を読んだ直後のためか、この追悼会の様子を YouTube で最初から最後まで見てしまった。ここでは Norah Jones が "Forever Young" を演奏。
